Detective Pikachu Returns

You play a young detective partnered with a talking Pikachu who insists on drinking coffee, walking around crime scenes and talking to Pokemon witnesses to gather clues. Cases are solved by picking the right dialogue and deduction options rather than any real combat or puzzles. It moves at a relaxed pace built for following a story and enjoying the banter rather than any real challenge.

Screenshots & review notes

Why it lands

It's slight and easy, more visual novel than detective game, but the odd-couple chemistry between Tim and his coffee-guzzling Pikachu partner carries it further than the mystery plots do.

How it plays

Interviewing Pokemon witnesses and piecing together simple clues rarely challenges you, but the writing's comic timing keeps each case moving at a pleasant clip.

Style and score

The city setting is colorful and lived-in, and Pikachu's gravelly voice performance does a lot of heavy lifting in making the whole thing memorable.

A comfortable pick for kids and Pokemon fans wanting something low-pressure. Anyone hoping for real detective challenge will find the puzzles far too forgiving.

What it's like to play

You control a talking, coffee-obsessed Pikachu wearing a tiny deerstalker hat, walking around the streets of Ryme City alongside a young man named Tim, tapping the stick to move and a button to interact with people, objects, and clues scattered through each scene. Cases open with someone reporting a problem, usually involving a missing person or a troubled Pokemon acting strangely, and you spend your time talking to witnesses, examining scenes for glowing points of interest, and jotting findings into a notebook that tracks what you know so far. Periodically the game presents a short deduction scene where you pick from a short list of conclusions based on the clues you gathered, and getting it right moves the story forward. The Pokemon around you, from grumpy witnesses to shy suspects, each have small personalities that come through in dialogue and quirky animations.

The overall goal across the game is unraveling a larger mystery involving Tim's missing father, which the individual cases slowly feed into even though each one wraps up its own smaller story along the way. A single case usually takes somewhere between thirty minutes and an hour, walking between a few locations, talking to a handful of characters, and solving one deduction scene at the end. As the story continues, cases involve slightly more locations and characters to track, though the deductions themselves stay fairly gentle and the game rarely lets you feel truly stuck.

This is squarely built for younger players or Pokemon fans who want a light story rather than a real test of logic, since most adults will spot the answer to a case well before the game asks for it. A few middle chapters slow down with repeated clue-gathering that can feel like padding. If you want a cozy mystery game to play with a kid, or you simply enjoy hanging out with a chatty, coffee-loving Pikachu, this delivers a pleasant, easygoing few evenings.
